Night 🦉 to Morning Girl

Hey everyone! Happy Sunday! My best friend Jordan asked me last week if I have always been a morning person or if I had to force myself into it. I just want to say for the record, that not only have I not always been a morning person, but I have tried and tried and tried multiple times to become one, all with failed attempts at truly establishing a firm and lasting routine—that is until now at least.

So how did I do it? How did I finally take a step into becoming a morning gal? Was it going to bed early? Was it something I eased into? Or did I just go balls to the walls one night, set my alarm for 430; 445; 500; 505; and finally the last one at 515 to get my tooshie out of bed?

First, I would like to say that I’m pretty sure having a solid M-F job with fairly consistent hours truly helped lay my foundation, I just wanted to start with that, but I don’t want that to deter you if you don’t have a job that offers you that “consistency” because I truly believe any goal can be crushed if you are self-disciplined enough to follow through.

  1. So the first thing I did was met a friend, her name is Alexis, but I call her Lexi, and she is a true gem. My gym bud, my fitness accountability pal, and just a good friend who also had the same goal as me: To be a morning gym goer so we could start off our day on the right foot. love you Lexi, If you’re reading this - she knows how much she means to me, but a little shout out never hurt anyone.

  2. I set a date for myself. I gave myself about two weeks to mentally prepare to kick start the morning routine, because up until that point I was up watching Netflix into all hours of the night and sleeping in as late as I could possibly manage before getting up and getting ready for the day, so ya girl needed some time to mentally, emotionally and physically prepare for this.

  3. Established a bed time. Folks if you want to wake up earlier, you can’t skimp on sleep. It is the MOST important time for your body to recoup and recover from a long day of all the shenanigans you put it through. Be kind to your body, give it the rest it deserves for lugging you around all day. I STRIVE to be in bed by 930-10 at the latest. I wake up at 5:15 after all.

  4. Prepare everything I need done in the morning, the night before, yes, that’s right, I said what I said. I prepare the coffee pot so it’s ready in the am, I lay out my gym outfit, I pack my gym bag with my work clothes and anything else I need to prepare myself for work after the gym, I pack my lunch, fill my water bottle, and lay out my shaker bottle and put all of my supplements in containers and pack them in my lunch box or gym bag. I do ALL of this the night before so I can set myself up for success in the AM. That way my 1 hour routine turns into a 15-30 minute routine. When I wake up, I literally throw on my gym clothes, feed my morning buddy (my sisters cat), use the bathroom, go through my facial regimen, brush my teeth, pour my coffee, grab my bag and purse and hit the door.

  5. I really do have 4 alarms set (but who doesn’t) My goal is to be up and out of bed by 5:15, so I have one set for 5:00, one for 5:05, one for 5:15 and one for 5:30 in case I sleep through all of those prior. 🤪🤪🤪 It has happened once, woke up at 630 in a state of panic one morning bc I slept through all the alarms, yeah that was a skip day! Lol

  6. And lastly, have something to wake up for! What’s your why?? Mine was to better my health by getting my butt to the gym. I have also been a huge advocate for physical fitness bc I know it’s benefits reach far beyond the physical realm and more so help me (and many others) internally while I work on external appearance. So maybe for you, your why is journaling, or more me time with your coffee, or a few minutes of calm before your day of bustling around and getting your children to school and events. Whatever it is , having a why can really motivate you intrinsically to follow through with your action plan!

It was and still is trial and error, but it’s also “I want this in my life, so I’m going to do these things for myself so I can achieve this”.

You can ask Lexi, there have been days when we couldn’t get up because we could sleep, so we took that day off to sleep in and give our bodies the rest they deserve. The important thing is that we only took that one day, and got right back into it the following day. We have also made adjustments to the workouts we build, the arrival time to the gym, thus affecting wake up time, requiring adjustments to time in the routine, but at the end of the day when it’s all said and done, I crawl in my bed and I feel GOOD about what I did that day.

Remember it takes 30 days to establish a new routine, and 90 days to turn it into a lifestyle. If you want something bad enough, you will be willing to adapt your life to reach that goal you have set out for yourself, and now that I have CONSISTENTLY been doing this morning gym thing for over three months now, I can say without certainly, it is worth setting goals and pursuing them, and giving yourself that sense of pride knowing... “YoU cAn dO aNyThiNg gOoD!”

Also, I would like to mention that I do use melatonin to help me go to sleep some nights, but try not to use it habitually as it can have some negative side effects with long-term use.

So what is something you’d like to start up in your life ?? What are your goals??
